Your first useful feature
A short, hands-on introduction to working with an AI coding agent.
Time: about 20 minutesYou will make: a small project planFor: beginners and curious builders
What vibe coding means here
You describe a result in ordinary language, ask an AI coding tool to help implement it, then run and inspect the software. You guide each step. The tool can write code quickly. You decide what the software should do and whether the result is correct.
Step 1. Choose a small project
For this lesson, use a reading list. A person can add a book title, mark it as planned or finished, and see the list again after refreshing the page. That gives you a clear result to build and check.
Write one sentence for your own project: "I want a [kind of app] that lets [person] do [action]. It is finished when [observable result]." Keep the first version to one main action.
Step 2. Ask for a plan
Open an AI coding tool that can work with files. If you already have a project, open its folder. If you are starting fresh, ask the tool to recommend the smallest setup and explain how to run it.
Copy this promptI want to build a reading list. A person can add a book title, mark each book as planned or finished, and keep the list after refreshing the page. First, inspect the project and explain how it works. Then propose the smallest implementation plan and tell me how I can run it. Do not edit files yet. Ask me about any decision that changes the scope.
Read the plan. Ask about any term you do not understand. Confirm the first version before asking the tool to edit files.
Step 3. Build one part
Start with adding and displaying one book. Run the app. Check that the title appears. Then ask for the next part, such as changing a book's status. Small steps make mistakes easier to find.
Next promptImplement only the first step we agreed on: let me add a book title and show it in the list. Keep the change small. Tell me which files you changed and how to run the app so I can check it.
Step 4. Check the result
- Add a book with a short title.
- Try an empty title and see what happens.
- Refresh the page and check whether the book remains.
- Compare the result with the plan. Write down any gap you see.
Give the tool the exact result. "The title disappeared after refresh" gives it useful evidence. Ask it to explain the cause before it changes more code.
Your free lesson exercise
Use the same four steps on a small idea of your own. Keep the first version to one action. Save your project sentence and the plan the tool proposed. You now have a brief for the next build session.
Finish with this reviewCompare the current app with the project sentence and plan. List what works, what does not work, and what you could not check. Point to the files or behavior behind each finding. Do not make more changes until I review the list.
Full course · Vibe coding
From first prompt to a working project
A practical course in planning, building, debugging, and reviewing software with an AI coding agent.
The free lesson gives you the first planning and build loop. The full course takes one project through setup, implementation, testing, and release. You will make the decisions and learn how to check each result.
LESSON 02Set up the project
Choose a small scope, inspect the existing files, and make a reliable run command.
LESSON 03Write a useful brief
Turn an idea into user actions, acceptance checks, and a short implementation plan.
LESSON 04Build in working slices
Implement one end-to-end behavior at a time and keep the app runnable.
LESSON 05Debug with evidence
Reproduce a failure, capture the exact behavior, and guide the fix from what happened.
LESSON 06Handle data and errors
Choose simple storage and add clear behavior for empty input and failed operations.
LESSON 07Review the whole change
Check the diff, test normal and edge cases, and look for privacy and accessibility issues.
LESSON 08Prepare a release
Write setup notes, verify the production build, and make a small release plan.
FINAL PROJECTFinish your own small app
Use the course checklists to take a project from idea to a result you can demonstrate.

Use AI as an editor and research aide
Keep the source material, argument, and final decisions in your hands.
1. Gather the material
Collect the notes, documents, and links the piece should rely on. Mark claims that need a source. Keep quotations beside their original source.
2. Write a short brief
Name the reader, purpose, format, length, and central point. Say what the piece should cover and what it should leave out.
Copy this promptHelp me plan a [format] for [reader]. The purpose is [purpose]. My central point is [claim]. Use only the material I provide. First list questions that need answering and propose an outline. Do not draft yet.
3. Check the outline
Put evidence near the claim it supports. Remove sections that do not help the reader. Ask for gaps and counterexamples before asking for polished prose.
4. Draft from evidence
Give the model the approved outline and source notes. Ask it to mark unsupported claims and preserve exact quotations. Add your own examples and observations.
5. Revise and verify
- Check names, dates, facts, and quotations against the sources.
- Make sure each paragraph advances the point.
- Read aloud and revise phrases you would not use.
Use the model to flag issues. You decide which edits belong in the final piece.
